ORA house is a synergy of three ecosystems that addresses social, housing and environmental challenges faced in the Middle East. The ‘Organic’ ecosystem represents all the passive design solutions comprising of the site deployment, landscaping and material systems. The ‘Resilient’ ecosystem comprises of all the active systems that are well integrated, seamlessly in to the design, offering much needed protection and refuge from the harsh weather conditions prevailing in the region. ‘Adaptive’ ecosystem defines the capacity to re-adjust and transform according to both the environment and the user.

ORA is innovative and strives to achieve an integrated and sustainable residential design solution relevant for the region.

The Team

The team is composed of an inter-disciplinary mix of students and faculty, with knowledge and expertise to address problems and their innovative solutions from various perspectives.

Our Goal

Our team’s goal is ORA. The aim of the project is to provide the U.A.E with an innovative design for a new type of biomimetic space that sustainably reduces carbon production and mitigates against climate change. ORA will make use of local materials, energy sources and the social and human capital here in the UAE to develop this innovative housing prototype. ORA will provide an exemplary module design adaptive to different users’ lives that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs, in addition to interacting with the user to offer the best environmental performance aligned to the user’s individual needs.

The Competition

The Solar Decathlon is an international competition created by the U.S. Department of Energy in which universities from all over the world meet to design, build and operate a grid-connected, solar powered house. The houses use solar energy as the only energy source and are equipped with all the technologies that permit maximum energy efficiency. During the final phase of the competition teams assemble their houses in a main expo area, open to the general public, while undergoing the 10 contests of the competition, reason for which this event is called Decathlon. (‘Deca’ derives from Greek and means ten). The first Solar Decathlon was held in 2002 and previous additions have been organized in different areas including the U.S, Europe and China.
